Prominent South African actor and producer Thapelo Mokoena has found his film production company embroiled in a serious tax dispute with the South African Revenue Service (SARS). Recent court filings reveal escalating tensions between the revenue service and Mokoena’s Easy Sundays Production company.

Documents obtained from the Johannesburg High Court indicate that SARS has filed for a default judgment against Easy Sundays Production. The legal action stems from alleged unpaid value-added tax (VAT) amounting to approximately R1.4 million. The original tax debt of R1.1 million reportedly ballooned due to accumulated penalties and interest charges.

SARS Cracks Down On Thapelo Mokoena’s Film Production Company

Before resorting to legal action, SARS issued a formal demand letter to Mokoena’s company on April 24, 2025. The correspondence gave the production house a 10-day ultimatum to settle the outstanding amount or negotiate a payment plan. The revenue service explicitly warned of potential asset seizure and auction if the debt remained unresolved.

“Failure to make full payment or use the available remedies may result in SARS obtaining a civil judgment against you, potentially leading to asset seizure and public auction,” stated the SARS demand letter.

Options for Debt Resolution

The tax authority outlined several potential solutions for the financially distressed company, including:

  • Negotiating an installment payment agreement
  • Requesting temporary debt suspension
  • Applying for debt reduction based on financial hardship

Despite these options, court records suggest Easy Sundays Production failed to respond adequately to SARS’s demands, prompting the current legal proceedings. The situation raises questions about financial management in the entertainment industry, particularly for high-profile production companies.

Potential Consequences

Should the court rule in SARS’s favor, the production company faces several potential consequences:

  • Forced asset liquidation
  • Garnishment of future income
  • Damage to business credit rating
  • Potential personal liability for company directors
