Scandal! “Romeo” Actor Hungani Ndlovu’s Posts Defending Pitbulls Backfire

Former Scandal actor Hungani Ndlovu has come under fire on social media following a series of posts in which he defended Pitbulls.

The actor is famous for playing the character of Romeo on etv’s Scandal!

Hungani Ndlovu’s Twitter posts defending pit bulls received a lot of backlash and appeared ill-timed, coming just a few days after a pitbull mauled a neighbour’s child to death in Vista Park, Bloemfontein.

The authorities put down the vicious dog after it escaped from its enclosure and jumped over the fence into the neighbour’s premises, where it mauled the 8-year-old to death.

This incident gave impetus to anti-pitbull activists calling for the vicious dogs to be banned.

After seemingly failing to read the room, Hungani Ndlovu made a series of posts in which he defended the Pitbulls and laid the blame on their owners instead.

The former Scandal! actor tweeted,

“Pit Bulls aren’t inherently dangerous dogs. The owner is responsible for how he/she moulds the dog. Y’all wanna ban Pit Bulls but keep Rottweilers, Bull Terriers, German Shepherds, the list goes on! It’s not the dog! IT’S THE OWNER!!!”

In a follow-up post, Hungani Ndlovu compared pit bulls to driving fast cars. He wrote,

“This Pit Bill (sic) situation is like blaming fast cars for people being involved in accidents instead of blaming the driver!!! You can’t drive 300km per hr then jiki jiki you’re in an accident and we must blame the car🤔 it’s the OWNER not the dog!”

In yet another post in which he defended the dangerous dogs, the Romeo actor compared the pit bulls to blaming alcohol for accidents caused by people who drink and drive.

“This PIT BULL situation is like blaming alcohol for the drunk drivers on the street instead of the drinker/driver. The problem is the owner not the dog!”

Given the high-profile incidents of pit bulls mauling young children, Hungani Ndlovu’s post did not sit well with most South Africans on social media.

They accused the actor of being tone-deaf and insensitive to the situation on the ground.

Others were critical of the actor’s logic and accused him of applying false equivalences and fallacious arguments to defend the Pitbulls.

@calibridaniels

“Wait baby, they put you on Scandal with THIS type of thinking? Pitbulls are murdering children and THIS is what you have to say?”

@Ipeleng101

“Stick to being an entertainer sana, thinking isn’t for you.”

@CoruscaKhaya

“Let’s just assume early morning Tweets are never going to be the apex of your contribution to society.”

@mboendlov

“Hebana! Gatsheni if its the owner and not the dog uOwner ulume bani has it been owners biting people? a car has a human behind it but a dog is a being with its own instincts and motivations.”

@BafanaSurprise

“Does this mean everything we saw on TV about you, was definitely scripted? It wasn’t you who had those amazing thoughts?

“So this is the real you, this is exactly how you think?”

@FineGirling

“Let’s not forget that a car can’t drive itself and it is controlled, but a pit bull can make decisions by itself, can’t be controlled.”

@KamogeloSono

“Never ever share your thoughts with us ever again!”

@emokalake

“Lets just say your social issues analogy isn’t the apex of your contribution to society…”

@LickshotLippy

“Defending animals when kids are gettin mauled is nuts. If dogs even look at my yout wrong I’m on them.”

However, a small minority tried to defend Hungani Ndlovu and ended up in the crosshairs as well.
