A former Senzo Meyiwa murder case investigator survived an attempted kidnapping.
South African Police Service (SAPS) National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has confirmed that a former investigator linked to the high-profile Senzo Meyiwa murder case narrowly escaped an attempted kidnapping during an armed robbery in Johannesburg.
The incident, which took place in Lombardy East in the early hours of Thursday, 15 May 2025, has raised concerns about witness safety in the ongoing trial.
Senzo Meyiwa Murder Case Investigator Kidnapping Attempt
According to police reports, the ex-investigator was travelling in an official vehicle when unidentified assailants forced him to stop. The suspects attempted to abduct him, but he resisted and managed to flee unharmed.

However, the attackers stole several items, including a state-issued firearm, ammunition, a police jacket, a laptop, USB drives, and photocopied documents related to the Meyiwa case.
General Masemola reassured the public that the stolen materials had already been presented in court and that the original case docket and crucial evidence remain secure. “This incident will not affect the trial proceedings,” he stated, emphasizing that the investigation into the attack is being treated as a top priority.
Police Launch Manhunt On Kidnappers
A specialized task force led by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has been deployed to track down the suspects. Crime Intelligence units are also involved in determining whether the attack was directly linked to the Meyiwa case or motivated by other factors.
