Senzo Meyiwa Trial: Disbarred Advocate Malesela Teffo Arrested For Fraud
Disbarred advocate Malesela Teffo is facing a slew of legal troubles after being arrested on charges of fraud, assault, malicious damage to property, and trespassing. The 53-year-old is expected to make his first appearance in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. This arrest adds to his existing legal battles, as he was already out on bail in connection with an assault case.
Arrest in High-Profile Setting
Teffo’s arrest took place in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria while he was representing individuals accused of killing Senzo Meyiwa. The police arrested him inside the courtroom in full view of cameras, drawing criticism from Chief Justice Raymond Zondo. Zondo condemned the manner in which the arrest was carried out, emphasizing that arresting anyone, especially a legal practitioner, inside a courtroom was completely unacceptable and showed disrespect for the judiciary.
Contempt of Court Allegations
Three months ago, the same court granted Teffo a reprieve to file papers before the matter between him and the Legal Practice Council (LPC) could be argued. The LPC had accused Teffo of contempt of court for continuing to practice as an advocate despite being disbarred. The council sought direct imprisonment for him due to his actions.
