Senzo Meyiwa Trial: Zandie Khumalo Jets Off After Bad Health Claims

Zandile “Zandi” Khumalo, a singer and the first witness in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, told the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday, 19 July, that she was experiencing chest pains. This came just hours after Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng postponed proceedings until Thursday.

Later that day, Zandie took to her Instagram account to share a picture from inside a plane with O.R Tambo International Airport tagged as her location. The post also included Michael Bubble’s hit song, Home. This has led to speculation that Zandie may have left Gauteng.

Trial Postponed

Zandie was among the people present in the Voloorus house in Gauteng when Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was killed in 2014 in what is believed to have been a botched robbery. During her testimony, she told the court that she recognized accused number two, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, as one of the two intruders who attempted to rob them on the night Meyiwa was killed.

The five men accused in the case are Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli. They are standing trial for premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of firearms without a license, and possession of ammunition.

After Zandie’s testimony, the court adjourned for lunch with the intention of resuming at 14:00 for her cross-examination. However, state prosecutor George Baloyi told the court that Zandie needed time to sort out her accommodation issue. When proceedings resumed some minutes later, Baloyi informed the court that Zandi was not feeling well.

Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng expressed frustration with the situation, saying “We can’t tolerate this. When she must be cross-examined there are problems.” Zandie responded by saying that she had a pain in her chest.

Uncertainty Surrounding Zandie Khumalo and her health

It is not clear if Zandi actually boarded a flight from Johannesburg or if the image she posted on Instagram is old. It is also uncertain if the trial will resume as planned tomorrow. In her post, Zandi wrote “And we were up…and off we went ❤️ because sometimes your sanity and peace should come before everything and everyone vele abantu baZokhuluma but ngeke bakwenzele lutho futhi ngeke bakwenze lutho [because people will run their mouths but they won’t do anything for you or to you], missed my son.”
