The Sierra Leone Football Association has become the latest national football association to rally behind South African business mogul, and owner of Mamelodi Sundowns FC, Patrice Motsepe, over the Confederation of African Football (CAF) presidency post.

This follows yesterday’s announcement by the South African Football Association (SAFA) over their preferred candidate for the continental football body’s top post with the elections expected to take place next year in March.

Isha Johansen, president of the Sierra Leone Football Association, has since said rallying behind Motsepe is based on obvious reasons.

“I think it’s for obvious reasons one has to look at football beyond 90 minutes, he is a humble man who is embracing the African narrative in Africa for African football. I think I speak for many that he is the unifier he doesn’t have greed or a dark side that’s why we are supporting him. You know it when you see it, when you drop a certain name then you know that’s the one.

Moreso, it is important that he owns a football club because it brings with it experience and it’s not about the monetary gain it’s about changing the narrative and chasing the African dream it’s for all not for one. It is about true passion and genuineness, he knows his football and he loves his football, it’s about being honest we all need change but what is this change really is it change for all?

This man will definitely bring genuine change not only for South Africa but for Africa he’s a successful businessman and he’s savvy it helps that he is extremely successful. We are rooting for him,” said Johansen.

However, it’s now yet to be seen how Motsepe who is currently in self-quarantine will whether or not formally accept SAFA’s nomination.

In the event that he does Motsepe will have to contend with the fact that he will have to relinquish his chairmanship at the club due to the issue of conflict of interest. Nigeria and Botswana are also some of the countries that have already cited they are behind his candidacy.
