Nonetheless, Sonia Mbele’s visit occurred only after Thabo Bester had been recaptured in Tanzania, along with his partner-in-crime Dr Nandipha Magudumana, back in April.
But, unlike others with dubious intentions, Mbele’s purpose for visiting was strictly business-driven.
Sonia Mbele’s production company had been tapped by an international outfit to team up as South African collaborators for producing the Bester and Magudumana docu-series.
The competition to craft a documentary detailing South Africa’s equivalent of Bonnie and Clyde is fierce, with streaming giant Netflix swamped with pitches to chronicle Bester’s audacious escape from Mangaung Correctional facility. Among these hopefuls stands the production company of one-time actress turned entrepreneur, Carol Bouwer.
Mbele’s Company Leads Race to Produce Docu-series
ZiMoja reports indicate that Netflix is keen on a company that possesses close ties to the duo. Zimoja has gathered that Sonia Films has outperformed Carol Bouwer Productions, outshining them in the race.
Sources affirm that Mbele was spotted visiting the notorious inmate at the Kgosi Mampuru II Prison in Tshwane, assisted by his legal team. It’s rumoured that she managed to secure a meeting with Bester to finalize the agreement for acquiring the ‘rights’ to his narrative. Another insider suggests that she also has a connection with Magudumana, a relationship forged through her beauty clinic.
A source said that Magudumana is okay with Mbele having the rights to their story because she is familiar with her.
“Nandipha is comfortable with Mbele telling their story because she is familiar with her,” the source said.
