South Africa Faces Fuel Price Hikes As Oil Prices Rise Above R1 600 A Barrel
South African motorists could face another fuel price blow in August after a sharp increase in global oil prices reversed earlier expectations of major relief at the pumps.
Latest Central Energy Fund (CEF) data shows that the fuel outlook has deteriorated significantly in the final week of the month, with diesel facing the biggest risk of a price increase.
The developments come after international crude prices climbed above $100 a barrel, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Diesel Faces Biggest Threat
At the beginning of July, fuel users were expecting possible reductions after petrol showed an over-recovery of about R2.50 per litre.
However, the situation has changed dramatically, with diesel moving from a possible cut to a projected increase.
CEF figures indicate that 0.05% diesel is currently showing an under-recovery of about R1.31 per litre, while 0.005% diesel is sitting at an under-recovery of R1.11 per litre.
Illuminating paraffin has also moved into negative territory, with an under-recovery of around R1.03 per litre.
Petrol Cuts Could Be Limited
Petrol prices remain in a slightly better position, but the expected reductions are much smaller than earlier forecasts.
Current estimates suggest:
- 93 octane petrol: decrease of about 34 cents per litre
- 95 octane petrol: decrease of about 29 cents per litre
However, the potential petrol cuts are unlikely to offset the wider pressure created by rising international fuel prices.
Middle East Conflict Drives Oil Prices Higher
The latest fuel pressure comes as instability in the Middle East continues to affect global energy markets.
The conflict, which has expanded beyond the Strait of Hormuz towards the Red Sea region, has raised concerns over possible disruptions to oil supplies.
Crude prices recently climbed above $100 a barrel for the first time in two months, increasing the cost of importing fuel.
US President Donald Trump has also indicated that he is considering further military action against Iran while pushing for negotiations, adding uncertainty to already volatile oil markets.
Final Fuel Prices Still To Be Confirmed
While CEF data provides an indication of possible movements, the final fuel price adjustments will only be announced by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy after considering additional factors, including exchange rate movements and other fuel-related costs.
