Three suspects arrested over shooting

Police confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the shooting, which injured two protesters, including a 17-year-old.

According to investigators, the suspects allegedly opened fire on demonstrators as they marched through the Hillbrow area. The motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation.

Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the three suspects were taken into custody shortly after the incident.

She added that officers recovered two licensed firearms believed to have been used in the attack. The weapons have been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

Vehicle torched in apparent retaliation

Following the shooting, angry protesters allegedly retaliated by setting the suspects’ vehicle on fire, further heightening tensions in the area.

The burning vehicle drew a large crowd and raised fears of further violence, prompting authorities to deploy members of the South African National Defence Force to help restore calm and maintain order.

Suspects to appear in court

The three suspects are expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, where they will face attempted murder charges.

Police said investigations are continuing to establish the full sequence of events that led to the violence, while authorities have urged residents to remain calm as security forces monitor the situation.
