South African Comedian Madluphuthu Dies at age 50

Renowned actor and comedian Oscar Mgudlwa, popularly known as Madluphuthu, has died.

He was 50.

He passed on Wednesday, 16 July 2025, at a hospital in Rosettenville, Johannesburg.

Son Confirms Madluphuthu’s Death in an Emotional Post

He was best known for his iconic role in the cult-favourite Madluphuthu film series of the early 2000s. Mgudlwa also appeared in e.tv’s Isitha, and was active in the music industry, mentoring young talent as a songwriter. Most recently, he had joined the cast of e.tv’s The Black Door.

His son, Asanda Mgudlwa, confirmed his death in a heartfelt social media post, writing:

“Rest in peace dad. I love you and I will forever love you, Madiba Dlomo.”

Madluphuthu’s Cause of Death Revealed

His brother, Sipho Mgudlwa, said the news left the family shattered, especially since Oscar had only started complaining about breathing problems a few days before.

“My brother complained about breathing complications on Sunday. He died at a hospital in Rosettenville in Joburg,” Sipho said.

He said the family was heartbroken and caught off guard by his sudden passing.

“We didn’t expect his sudden death,” he added.
