Healthcare Access “For All”—Government Responds

In a statement released on Saturday, the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) described the actions as unlawful and contrary to constitutional rights.

Taking the law into one’s own hands is unacceptable and undermines the values enshrined in our democratic Constitution,” the statement declared.

Officials emphasised that every person, regardless of immigration status, is entitled to healthcare services.

“Section 27(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, clearly provides that “everyone has the right to have access to healthcare services”.

“This right is not subject to an individual’s nationality or immigration status. Denying individuals healthcare based on their origin is a violation of our laws and values as a nation.

“Additionally, South Africa is a signatory to several regional and international agreements that aim to ensure access to healthcare for its citizens and, in some cases, for individuals within its borders,” said the GCIS.

Rising Tensions Over Strained Resources

The government acknowledged that many communities are frustrated by overcrowded clinics, long queues, and exhausted medical staff. While recognising these pressures, authorities urged citizens to voice their concerns through legal avenues rather than resorting to intimidation.

Police Deployed to Restore Order

The South African Police Service has started deploying Public Order Police units to affected facilities to prevent further confrontations. Law enforcement warned that anyone caught harassing patients or obstructing services would be arrested.

Balancing Immigration Enforcement and Public Health

While reaffirming its commitment to enforcing immigration laws, the government also pledged to expand healthcare resources and improve staffing levels to meet demand.

The Department of Home Affairs and other agencies are expected to step up operations targeting undocumented individuals, but officials stressed that these efforts must not violate the rights of people in need of medical care.

Public Fury over Government’s Statement

The government’s statement sparked outrage from South Africans. Netizens argued that overcrowded facilities have left citizens struggling to access care, fuelling resentment toward foreign nationals.

@Zani_Baccaria;

We will continue to block until that law and constitution is amended, we are taxpayers and we have a say in this.

@ipsmok;

If the government doesn’t protect its citizens, the people must rise and do what’s good for them!
