South Africans Outraged as Chidimma Adetshina’s Mother is Granted Bail

South Africans are expressing outrage after Anabela Rungo, the mother of former Miss South Africa finalist Chidimma Adetshina, was granted R10,000 bail and placed under house arrest.

This comes despite the State opposing her release, citing her as a flight risk due to her immigration violations.

Rungo, a Mozambican national, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon.

She was arrested eleven days ago on charges of identity fraud after it was discovered that she had illegally obtained South African documentation.

Immigration Violations and Arrest

Authorities allege that Rungo violated multiple immigration laws and had been staying in South Africa illegally. As a result, the State pushed for her continued detention, arguing that she could flee the country if released. However, the presiding magistrate ruled in her favor, granting bail with the condition that she remain under house arrest.

Rungo was arrested at a Cape Town property nearly two weeks ago by a joint operation between Home Affairs officials and the South African Police Service (SAPS). Her South African documents were revoked last September after an investigation uncovered fraudulent acquisition.

Concerns Over Chidimma’s Daughter

At the time of her arrest, Rungo was found guarding Chidimma’s daughter, raising concerns about the child’s welfare. Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza confirmed that the department was working with the Department of Social Development and SAPS Child Protection Unit to ensure the child’s safety.

Home Affairs is further liaising with the Department of Social Development and SAPS Child Protection Unit as it relates to protecting the interests of the underage child. The department will provide further updates at opportune moments,” Qoza stated.

Case Postponed for Further Investigation

Rungo’s case has been postponed to May 8 as investigations continue. Meanwhile, public frustration continues to mount over her bail decision, with many questioning whether justice is being served.
