South Africa’s celebrity snake handler and famed YouTuber Graham ‘Dingo’ Dinkelman has died after being bitten by green mamba

Wildlife enthusiast and famed YouTuber Dingo Dinkelman, affectionately known as “South Africa’s Steve Irwin,” passed away on Saturday after a prolonged fight for his life in an ICU.

The 44-year-old succumbed to complications from a venomous bite from a green mamba, sustained at his home in September 2024.

A Month-Long Battle for Survival

Following the bite, Dinkelman was immediately hospitalized after going into anaphylactic shock, a reaction worsened by his known allergy to snake venom. To stabilize him, doctors placed him on a ventilator and induced a coma, hoping it would allow his body time to recover. Unfortunately, Dinkelman’s condition deteriorated, and he lost the battle a month later.

Family Reflects on Dinkelman’s Legacy

Kirsty Dinkelman, Dingo’s wife, shared heartfelt reflections on his life, emphasizing the deep compassion that extended beyond reptiles.

There was a special place in his heart for African mammals, his favourites being elephants, rhinos and lions, as well as our own giraffe, Elliot. But it was truly his love for his family that was always behind his purpose, drive, and passion.”

Dinkelman’s journey to international recognition began in 2017 when he won the Cell C and Blink Pictures #BreakTheNet (#BTN) competition.

The win propelled his career, as viewers around the world fell in love with his charismatic approach to wildlife conservation.

Through his daring antics and dedication, he brought attention to South African wildlife and highlighted the importance of preserving animal habitats.
