Early Life and Background

Sthandiwe Kgoroge was born in Columbus, Ohio, USA. However, she spent her formative years in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, from the age of six to ten. Sthandiwe has three brothers, although tragedy struck with the loss of her eldest brother during political unrest in Maphumulo, KwaZulu-Natal. As a teenager, she was known for her spirited and tomboyish nature, grappling with self-image issues until she came to embrace her beautiful dark complexion.

Her father’s passing in 2016 deeply impacted her, as he played a significant role in shaping her identity.

Education

Sthandiwe Kgoroge attended Albini Girls High School, and her thirst for knowledge led her to the University of Natal, where she pursued a course in drama and sociology.

Acting Career

Sthandiwe’s journey in the world of entertainment began on the stage, with notable performances in productions such as “Macbeth” at the Playhouse during her school years. In 1999, she made her entrance into the film industry, debuting in the series “Yizo Yizo.” Her exceptional talent earned her an Avanti award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. She gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of twins in the long-running series “Generations” from 1999 to 2005.

Continuing her success, Sthandiwe later took on the role of Grace Ndlovu in the SABC1 drama series “Fallen” in 2011, and in 2015, she embarked on a starring role in the Mzansi Magic telenovela “The Road.” Her diverse television credits also include appearances in “Only Love,” “Pedro the Music Man,” “Second Chances” in the Heartlines film, and the second season of “Snitch.” Additionally, she lent her voice to the character Khumba in the SABC2 show “Adventures at the Waterhole.” Sthandiwe’s talent also shone on stage, with performances in productions like “Macbeth” at The Playhouse and “Dr. Faust” and “Have You Seen Zandile?” at the University of Natal.

She appeared in series 5 of MTV Shuga in recent years as Aunt Nomalenga. She returned to the role for the mini-series “MTV Shuga Alone Together,” which shed light on the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, premiering on 20 April 2020.

Sthandiwe’s unique style has also inspired her to design clothes, including her signature Simon and Mary hats.

In 2008, she received recognition when Five Roses sponsored the designs of notable designers like Mantsho (Palesa Mokubung), Hermanna Rush (Nicole Dersley and Jacqueline Corfield), and Miss Scarlet (Jacky Lucking). She was commissioned to design dresses for renowned celebrities, including herself, cementing her influence in the world of fashion.

Sthandiwe is married to the accomplished actor and producer Tony Kgoroge. The couple tied the knot on the 21st December 2002.

Sthandiwe and Tony Kgoroge are blessed with 3 children.
