11 Bodies Found Across Gauteng

The latest discovery brings the number of women whose bodies have been found in the Ekurhuleni area to 10, while the total number of bodies discovered across Gauteng in recent weeks has risen to 11.

The string of discoveries has triggered growing concern, with vigils, protests and solidarity runs held in different parts of South Africa in remembrance of the victims.

Hundreds of people have taken part in gatherings stretching from Kempton Park to Cape Town, with calls for stronger measures to protect women and address gender-based violence.

GBV Concerns Grow

The latest cases have also renewed attention on South Africa’s ongoing gender-based violence crisis.

The government’s 24-hour Gender-Based Violence Command Centre recorded 6,782 distress calls between September 1 and 16, averaging about 424 calls a day.

The figure represented a 21% increase compared with the same period in August.

As investigations into the latest discovery continue, the deaths have also heightened concerns among women, many of whom have increasingly resorted to taking additional precautions in their daily lives.
