What should have been a day of jubilation for the Gcabashe family turned into a nightmare as they gathered to celebrate their sister’s traditional union. In a heart-wrenching turn of events, four brothers, Bhekisisa, Msawenkosi, Sanziso, and Veli Gcabashe, were killed just hours before the joyous occasion.

According to sources, the brothers were immersed in merriment, enjoying the festivities with song, dance, and the traditional brew, umqombothi, within the confines of a rondavel. Suddenly, the atmosphere shattered as five unidentified assailants stormed in, unleashing a barrage of gunfire that silenced the joy and left a community reeling in shock and grief.

“The wedding had to continue as per custom even after the murders,” remarked Phumzile’s husband, Msizi Shangase, reflecting on the grim reality that overshadowed what should have been a day of bliss.

Despite the horror that befell them, the wedding persevered, though forever marked by the stain of tragedy. “While we are relieved to have upheld tradition, the memory of that fateful day will haunt us indefinitely,” shared Msizi, his voice heavy with sorrow.

Reason For the murder of the four brothers

The motive behind the heinous act remains shrouded in mystery, leaving a community gripped by fear and uncertainty. “Our sense of security has been shattered, for we know not whether the perpetrators will return to inflict further harm,” expressed Msizi, echoing the sentiments of many.

In addition to claiming the lives of the Gcabashe brothers, the assailants inflicted injuries upon three others who were present, further compounding the tragedy. These survivors now lie in hospital beds, fighting to heal both physically and emotionally from the scars of that harrowing day.

KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident.
