Speaking at the event, held on 12 September at Eyethu Heritage Hall in Soweto, Mthethwa expressed his anger over the lack of support for artists during their struggles and only being honoured after their deaths.

“Why is it that we are only celebrated when we are dead? How many people actually visited him when he was sick and checked up on him to see if he was ok? But when artists die, they get front-row seats.”

He compared artists to soldiers and police officers, who are honoured by their peers when they pass away.

“With us, Kwaito artists and people in the arts, we get the back seat and the government shines,” he said.

He added that this was no different during the memorials of other Kwaito legends, such as Mandoza.

“The government only supports the dead,” he bashed.

Mthethwa’s impassioned speech resonated with many mourners, who cheered and applauded his remarks. Mapaputsi, born Sandile Ngwenya, died on 5 September after battling illness since October 2023. While many fondly remembered him for his contributions to the Kwaito genre, Mthethwa’s speech brought attention to the harsh realities of the entertainment industry.

Other tributes at the memorial service took a more personal tone. Mapaputsi’s widow, Ayolla Ngwenya, spoke tearfully about the loss of her husband.

“I know I’m too young to be in this position; I pray that God gives me strength and power to carry on,” she said, vowing to care for his children and parents.

Ghetto Ruff founder Lance Stehr recalled Mapaputsi’s vibrant energy and unique talent, praising his pioneering music video where he appeared to float while rapping.
