Two police officers and a police station cleaner have been dragged to court following accusations of stealing spilled washing powder from a crashed delivery truck.

The trio, stationed at the Modimolle SAPS, made a brief appearance in the local magistrate’s court on Monday. Their case was postponed to Friday for bail applications. The accused—aged 49, 50, and 55—face serious charges, including theft and obstruction of justice.

Two Police Officers Arrested After Stealing Washing Powder

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the incident occurred on July 14 when a truck transporting detergent lost control on the R101 near Modimolle, spilling its cargo. In the ensuing chaos, the two officers allegedly used a marked police vehicle to collect the scattered washing powder.

“The general cleaner was later implicated in the crime,” Ledwaba added.

The statement did not share how the cleaner was involved in stealing the loot. The three were arrested and will be charged with theft and obstructing justice. This case has elicited a range of mixed reactions from South Africans, as some are mocking the officers for allegedly stealing washing powder.

Investigation and Arrests Made Amid Investigation

A collaborative effort between the Limpopo Anti-Corruption Unit and the Modimolle Criminal Record Centre led to the arrests. Authorities managed to recover some of the stolen goods, though the exact value of the loot remains undisclosed.

The total value will be disclosed during the trial as the case is now in court.

This case highlights ongoing concerns about misconduct within law enforcement, particularly in relation to opportunistic crimes that occur during chaotic situations.

Updates on the case are expected after Friday’s bail hearing.
