Two South African women are being tried after they were arrested for orchestrating an online romance scam on an unsuspecting female. Nomfusi Princess Fortune, aged 33, and her alleged accomplice, Zizipho Mqikela, 32, have recently appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.

The two are accused of being involved in a high-profile romance scam that defrauded a victim of a staggering R2 million. The duo is facing severe fraud and money laundering charges as the investigation unfolds.

Details Of The Online Romance Scam Case

The case dates back to June 2019, when a victim reported the incident to authorities at the Norwood police station. According to Hawks spokesperson Capt Lloyd Ramovha, the victim met a man who identified himself as Allen Graig on Facebook. After establishing a sense of trust through frequent communication on WhatsApp, the alleged scammer began to manipulate the victim emotionally, eventually asking for money under various pretences.

As the investigation progressed, it was discovered that Nomfusi Princess Fortune’s Capitec bank account had received three separate deposits totalling R70,000. Meanwhile, her co-accused, Zizipho Mqikela, allegedly received a much larger R580,000 through seven different transactions into her FNB account.

The accused have been granted bail despite these substantial amounts being traced to their bank accounts. Fortune was released on a bail amount of R2,000, while Mqikela was freed on a bail of R3,000.

Impact of the Scam on the Victim

The victim, believing she was in a genuine relationship, only realized the deception after transferring R2 million to various bank accounts linked to the scam. Unfortunately, this type of online manipulation is becoming increasingly common, highlighting the need for greater vigilance among internet users.
