Exodus Continues: DJ Obza Joins List of Departing Artists from Open Mic Productions

In the latest blow to Open Mic Productions, rising star DJ Obza has officially parted ways with the controversial record label, opting to pursue an independent path in his musical career.

This departure follows a series of exits, including the label’s legal representative, Managing Director Nkateko Maluleke, artist manager Brendon Maseko, and three additional staff members who left in the wake of established artists like Makhadzi, Prince Benza, Master KG, and Nomcebo pursuing solo ventures.

Allegations of Neglect: DJ Obza’s Decision Rooted in Dissatisfaction

A source close to DJ Obza revealed to Zimoja that his decision to leave was rooted in a feeling of neglect by the label. The insider explained,

“He felt that through the years of him being at the label, he was not getting much attention.”

The focus was mostly on the well-known artists.” The source continued, “He released albums, but none of them had done well; he was still hustling, unlike the other stars who had been doing well.”

Public Diplomacy vs. Private Discontent: DJ Obza’s Contrasting Statements

Contrary to these sentiments, DJ Obza publicly stated that he enjoyed his time with Open Mic Productions. The source, however, dismissed this as a diplomatic move, asserting, “Of course, he would say that. He doesn’t want to burn his bridges, but we all know he was not happy.”

In his official statement, DJ Obza expressed gratitude for the experiences gained and rewarding years at the label. “After three studio albums and some wonderful personal and creative relationships, it is time to depart from my former record label. It has been an honour to be part of such an exceptional team,” he declared. “However, it is time for me to venture out as an independent artist.”

Open Mic Productions Silent Amidst Growing Turmoil

Despite attempts to obtain comments from Open Mic Productions Music Executive Lionel Jamela, he remained unavailable for response. The departure of DJ Obza adds to the growing challenges faced by the label, raising questions about the stability and future of Open Mic Productions in the competitive music industry.
