Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark, Evaton, Sebokeng To Get Water Reductions

By Daniel Itai, Emfuleni, South Africa

Today some residents of the Emfuleni municipality woke up to low pressured water due to some water restrictions that have since been instigated by Rand Water.

The Emfuleni municipality is owing Rand Water R1.1 billion which has prompted the water supplying entity to reduce water supply by 20 percent.

However, residents of Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark, Evaton, and Sebokeng are not the only ones going through the water reduction process as residents of Victor Khanye which is owing R194 million, and Govan Mbeki which is owing R351 million in the Mpumalanga province have also been slapped with the same measure.

“Rand water is going to reduce water flow by 20 percent to the municipalities of Emfuleni in Gauteng, Victor Khanye, and Govan Mbeki in Mpumalanga because they have failed to meet repayment arrangements.

Moreover, we have formally informed them that we have reduced the flow of water, high laying areas of these municipalities will most likely feel the pinch.

However, we are going to reduce it again by 40 percent if they don’t pay. The unfortunate part is that they are certain people who don’t pay and others who pay but it will affect everyone when we reduce pressure.

Moreover, if these municipalities don’t meet their obligation then more people will have their water cut as I have alluded to earlier on,” said Justice Mohale, spokesperson of Rand water.

Moreso, Gauteng’s main water supplier which is ironically in the Emfuleni municipality, the Vaal Dam, is currently at less than 30 percent full which has since raised grave concerns with residents urged to use water sparingly.

A few years back the Western Cape province particularly in Cape Town had to undergo what they termed day zero on several occasions where residents wouldn’t get water due to low water levels in their reservoirs and dams.
