Now recovering at home, Winnie shared her astonishment at the diagnosis with ZiMoja.
“I didn’t know I had asthma until I experienced shortness of breath. I was so confused—I’ve never heard of anyone being diagnosed with asthma at my age,” she said.
Fortunately, doctors reassured her that it’s in the early stages and can be managed with proper care.

A History of Health Challenges
This isn’t Winnie’s first health scare. She was diagnosed with diabetes a few years ago, which she has successfully managed through careful diet and self-care.
“I take care of myself; make sure I eat well,’ she added.
In 2017, Winnie faced another hurdle when she was briefly wheelchair-bound following a back operation and an abscess that developed on her lower back. Despite these challenges, she remains optimistic.
“I am a fighter, everyone knows. Many of my peers have passed on but I want to see my grandchildren grow old, so I pray for long life,’ she said.

This year has been challenging for the Khumalo family’s health. In August, Winnie’s daughter, Rethabile Khumalo, was hospitalized after an alleged poisoning incident involving a friend. Rethabile had multiple hospital visits before eventually making a full recovery.
