A video showing Longwe Twala walking towards Senzo Meyiwa’s car has led to the lead investigator being grilled in court.
The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial took a dramatic turn as defence attorneys scrutinised video evidence presented by the prosecution. Advocate Charles Mnisi, representing two of the accused, led an intense cross-examination of lead investigator Brigadier Bongani Gininda regarding footage showing Longwe Twala approaching Meyiwa’s vehicle.

Uncertainty Surrounding Video Evidence
The contested video, captured in Vosloorus the day after Meyiwa’s killing, shows Twala walking toward the footballer’s BMW X6. Mnisi pressed Gininda on fundamental questions about the footage’s origins:
“Can you independently verify when this recording was made?” Mnisi challenged.
“I cannot confirm that information,” Gininda admitted.
The defense suggested Twala himself might provide the most reliable account of the video’s context, given his presence during the tragic incident. Gininda countered that multiple parties, including eNCA editors and witness Zandi Khumalo, could offer relevant insights.

Gininda firmly denied circulating rumours about Twala sustaining self-inflicted gunshot wounds:
“No official police documentation supports claims that Twala shot himself in the foot,” the investigator stated.
When questioned about potentially calling Twala as a witness, prosecutors maintained this decision fell outside the investigator’s jurisdiction, confirming their willingness to make available any witnesses not called by the state.
In related proceedings, Advocate Sipho Ramosepele clarified statements regarding his client Bongani Ntanzi’s appearance. He retracted earlier claims about Ntanzi never sporting an oval-shaped beard, explaining:
“My previous statement was misinterpreted. While Ntanzi may have had such facial hair at other times, no photographic evidence exists to confirm his appearance on the day of Meyiwa’s death.”

Background of the High-Profile Case
The trial continues to captivate South Africa as it examines the 2014 killing of the celebrated Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana captain. Meyiwa was fatally shot during an alleged home invasion in Vosloorus on October 26, with the case remaining unresolved for nearly a decade before reaching trial.
