Vusi Nova Early Life and Education
Vusi Nova, born Vusimuzi Nongxa on September 24, 1984, hails from New Brighton, a vibrant township in Gqeberha, South Africa. Raised by his grandmother, a church choir singer, he was immersed in music from a young age. Vusi’s passion for music led him to sing in the church and engage in musical activities throughout his primary and high school years in Gqeberha. In 1998, he embarked on a journey to Johannesburg to pursue his dream of becoming a professional singer. There, he enrolled at the National School of the Arts, where he honed his musical and dramatic talents.
Vusi Nova Career and Achievements
Vusi Nova’s musical journey began in 2009 when he signed with EMI Records, releasing his debut album, “Ndimfumene.” However, the album didn’t garner the attention he had hoped for, prompting him to join Kalawa Jazmee Records, collaborating with Oskido. Despite his efforts, he still didn’t achieve the desired success.
In 2012, Vusi signed with Muthaland Entertainment, owned by Lance Stehr. Under this new label, he released his debut studio album in 2013, titled “Walk Into Light.” The album featured collaborations with artists like Moneoa, Veezo, RJ Benjamin, and Ishmael, earning him recognition as an Afro-Soul artist.“Did It For Love”
In 2014, Vusi released his second studio album, “Did It For Love,” earning a Best RnB/Soul/Reggae Album nomination at the 21st South African Music Awards (SAMAs). The album included the hit single “I’d Rather Go Blind,” a cover of Etta James’ classic song.
Naninina
Two years later, Vusi Nova paid tribute to his late mother and grandmother with his third studio album, “Naninina.” This album achieved commercial and critical success, selling over 100,000 copies and winning three 2017 Metro FM Awards awards. It also received the Best Afro Album award at the 2017 South African Afro Music Awards (SAAFMA) and featured popular tracks like “Thandiwe” and “Naninina.”
Mayan-Nyan
In 2018, Vusi released his fourth studio album, “Mayan-Nyan,” certified gold with over 25,000 units sold. This album earned nominations for Album of the Year and Best Afro Pop Album at the 25th SAMAs, winning the Best Engineered Album of the Year award. It featured the anthem “As’phelelanga,” celebrating fallen heroes.
NguMama
In 2021, Vusi Nova released his fifth studio album, “NguMama,” dedicated to his late father. The album received the Best Afro Pop Album award at the 27th SAMAs and featured ” Yibanathi ” collaboration with gospel singer Dumi Mkokstad.
Beyond his music career, Vusi made his television debut as a judge on Amazing Voices season 2 in 2021.
Vusi Nova Personal Life and Controversies
Vusi Nova’s personal life and sexual orientation have been subjects of speculation and rumours. While some have claimed he is gay and engaged to a man named Joseph Safra, he has consistently denied these allegations, stating that he is heterosexual.In a harrowing incident in 2017, four men posing as police officers kidnapped and robbed Vusi. They subjected him to physical harm, stripping him naked and leaving him in Soweto. Despite the trauma, he survived and eventually recovered.
As of now, Vusi Nova is single and childless, though he has expressed a desire to have a biological child in the future.
