WATCH: Mpumalanga Teacher Suspended for Forcibly Cutting Learner’s Braids
A video of a Mpumalanga teacher forcibly cutting off a student’s braids has gone viral, leading to the teacher’s immediate suspension.
The incident occurred at LD Moetanalo High School in Mhluzi, outside Middleburg. In the video, the teacher, wearing a black dress, is seen pulling and cutting the student’s braids while other students scream and laugh.

Mpumalanga Teacher Suspended for Forcibly Cutting Learner’s Braids
The Mpumalanga Department of Education has condemned the teacher’s behaviour and launched an investigation into the matter. Department spokesperson Jasper Zwane stated that teachers are expected to conduct themselves professionally and in the best interests of students.
“Teachers are expected to conduct themselves appropriately and professionally as guided by their professional ethics and conduct according to SACE; hence, this conduct is deemed inappropriate. They are supposed to be mindful of the Bill of Rights and always act in the best interests of learners,” said Zwane.

Support and Counseling for Affected Students
The department has suspended the teacher while the investigation is ongoing. The victimized student and other affected learners will also receive urgent psychosocial counselling.
Zwane added that further information will be provided once the investigation is concluded.
“The Department will also reflect on the school’s code of conduct for learners as part of the investigation process. The Department will provide more information on the matter once the investigation is concluded,” Zwane added.
