The Western Cape rugby community is reeling after 24-year-old Ashwill Sauls died after a fatal tackle during a game.

Sauls passed away in hospital following a deadly tackle during a friendly match between Robertson Rangers and Montagu RFC on Saturday afternoon. The young player suffered multiple broken ribs in the collision and was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The Rangers had made the short journey of just over 25 kilometers to Montagu, but what was supposed to be a routine match ended in heartbreak. Sauls, who had played for the Robertson-based club for five years, was severely injured during the match and couldn’t be saved.
Boland Rugby Union president Bennie van Root confirmed the devastating news and expressed his support for the grieving family.
“It’s a sad day for the deceased’s family, as well as for the region’s wider rugby community,” Van Root said.
The union has promised to support the Sauls family and the Rangers during this difficult time.

The Sauls family has chosen to stay silent on the matter, declining to comment on the tragic incident. The Boland Rugby Union has also urged the media and the rugby community to respect the family’s request for privacy as they mourn the loss of their loved one.
The rugby union has further asked for people to show sensitivity in the aftermath of the tragedy, calling on the public to refrain from posting or sharing insensitive comments about Sauls’ death on social media platforms.
