South Africans online are celebrating the death of former Public Enterprises and Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan earlier this morning at an undisclosed hospital.
Gordhan’s family revealed that the 75-year-old politician and liberation stalwart passed on in the early hours of Friday morning:
“Gordhan passed away peacefully in the hospital, surrounded by his family, closest friends and his lifelong Comrades in the liberation struggle in the early hours of this morning.”
While on the deathbed, Gordhan was clear:
“I have no regrets. We have made our contribution.”
Pravin Gordhan Cause Of Death
On Wednesday 11 September, the Gordhan family confirmed that the former minister was in hospital receiving treatment. They did not disclose his condition. They have since disclosed that he succumbed to cancer.

In March, Gordhan announced that he would retire following the May elections. His health issues were already public knowledge – last year, a parliamentary meeting with Gordhan was cancelled due to his ill health. A doctor had warned him against air travel.

Following the development, President Cyril Ramaphosa mourned Pravin Gordhan:
“We have lost an outstanding leader whose unassuming persona belied the depth of intellect, integrity and energy with which he undertook his activism, his duty as a parliamentarian and his roles as a member of Cabinet.
“Pravin Gordhan’s personal sacrifices and his endeavours and achievements in various sectors of our society endowed him with the insights, empathy and resilience that fuelled his service to the nation.”
However, South Africans online did not share the same sentiments. They were celebrating Gordhan’s death.
