“She Hit Me with a Beer Bottle”: Woman Reveals How Gogo Maweni Brutally Assaulted Her
Controversial sangoma Gogo Maweni is at the centre of a dramatic court case after being accused of assaulting a woman with a beer bottle in 2019.
The trial kicked off at the Protea Magistrate’s Court in Soweto this week, with emotional testimony from the complainant, Celiwe Khulu, who claims the incident left her permanently scarred.
Complainant Describes Violent Attack
In her testimony, Celiwe Khulu claimed that Maweni appeared from behind her and began shouting insults before allegedly striking her with a beer bottle on the head and mouth.
“She was hurling insults. When she was insulting me, she didn’t give me a chance to respond,” Khulu told the court.
“She hit my head first, then when I turned around she hit my mouth using a beer bottle. I had a cut on my head, a broken tooth, and my sister took me inside the house to see the extent of the injuries,” she said.

Serious Injuries and Hospitalisation
Celiwe said she was taken to the Chiawelo Community Health Centre for emergency treatment but was later transferred to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. She required stitches to both her head and mouth.
She further claimed that Maweni continued to intimidate her, threatening that the case would go nowhere because she could bribe the police.
Previous Threats Cited in Court
Celiwe also testified that this was not the first time she had sought the court’s protection against Maweni. She recalled a separate incident where Maweni allegedly followed her to her brother’s home, shouting and kicking doors before being removed by police.
“She told me she would take care of me as she did my friend,” Celiwe claimed.
Trial Postponed
The matter has been postponed to June 12 for further investigation. Maweni has not publicly responded to the allegations.
