‘You are an attention seeker’ Zandie Khumalo Gumede’s Letter To The President Gets Mixed Reactions

South Africans have weighed in following musician Zandie Khumalo’s letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa regarding the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial.

Zandie Khumalo’s Appreciation and Concerns

Zandie Khumalo, the sister of musician Kelly Khumalo and one of the six adults present at the house on the night of Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa’s murder in October 2014, expressed her gratitude to President Ramaphosa for his interest in the case. She appreciated the decision to replace Judge Maumela with Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng for the trial proceedings.

In her letter, Zandie acknowledged her limited knowledge of the court’s modus operandi and its relationship with politics. However, she found comfort in knowing that the president was invested in the court case.

Prioritizing the Case

Zandie urged President Ramaphosa to prioritize the case and avoid any further delays. She requested the allocation of a dedicated courtroom for the trial, along with a specific legal team solely focused on this case. Zandie proposed that the trial should take place from Monday to Friday until a verdict is reached.

Expressing her desire for justice for Senzo Meyiwa, Zandie emphasized her willingness to testify again in court.

Reactions on Twitter

Twitter users have expressed a divided opinion regarding Zandie’s letter. Some individuals agree with her sentiments, while others perceive her actions as attention-seeking.

Many Twitter users advised Zandie to address her concerns to the appropriate offices, such as the Gauteng Judge President or the Chief Justice’s office. They highlighted that the President does not have the authority to make determinations on judicial matters due to the separation of powers within the country’s trias politica system.

“I agree, it’s been long overdue, but your stories still don’t add up. If you told the truth, we wouldn’t be here,” wrote one user.

Another user stated, “I’m sorry, but this still seems like she’s putting up a show to me. She knows that letter won’t even reach the president.”

One Twitter user pointed out the impossibility of Zandie’s request, stating, “An impossible request: trias politica is our system.”

Another individual suggested, “Writing to the Judge President would have been ideal. If you don’t get the desired outcome, proceed to the Chief Justice. Writing to the President of the country is rather attention-seeking and futile because Cyril can’t make that determination due to the separation of powers.”
