Ritual Killings In Nigeria

This is not the first time that such a gruesome murder has occurred in Nigeria. In March 2022, a 22-year-old woman named Oluwabamise Ayanola was declared missing after boarding a Lagos Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus. Her lifeless body was later found at the morgue of the Mainland Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, with her private part chopped off.

The driver of the BRT bus, Andrew Nice, 47, was arrested in his hideout at Ososa, Ogun State, by the Department of State Services. He admitted to having killed the female passenger and was arraigned in court in Ikeja on April 5.

Human rights activists and civil society groups have condemned these barbaric acts and called for an end to ritual killings in Nigeria. They have also demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice and that the government provide adequate security and protection for women and girls.

Ritual killings are believed to be carried out by some people who use human body parts for money-making or power rituals. They are often associated with superstition, poverty, ignorance, and corruption in society. The victims are usually vulnerable and unsuspecting individuals who fall prey to their killers.

The Nigerian government has enacted laws and policies to combat this menace, such as the Anti-Torture Act of 2017 and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act of 2015.
