Zakes Bantwini has eaten humble pie and issued apology to fellow musician DJ Cleo following his recent post criticizing the Kwaito tribute at the SAMAs by Cleo.

On Saturday night, the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) honoured the kwaito genre with a special tribute led by DJ Cleo. While many praised the performance, Grammy-winning artist Zakhele Madida, better known as Zakes Bantwini, shared mixed feelings about it.

In a post on social media, Zakes Bantwini acknowledged DJ Cleo’s tribute but expressed some disappointment regarding the representation of kwaito’s origins. I enjoyed the 30-year kwaito tribute by DJ Cleo but felt the Durban kwaito era wasn’t adequately showcased in the set, he commented.

DJ Cleo Responds to Zakes Bantwini

DJ Cleo, whose real name is Tlou Cleopas Monyepao, did not hesitate to respond to Zakes’ public remarks. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), DJ Cleo addressed Zakes Bantwini directly, expressing admiration and disappointment over his approach.

My brother, I respect you and your contributions. I have always supported your work, and I’ve never publicly criticized you, DJ Cleo replied. You know how political the SAMAs can be, and this is not my show or stage to control. Let’s lead the younger generation by example and avoid turning to social media to express grievances.
