Zanzou Nightclub’s Liquor Licence Suspension

The suspension of Zanzou Nightclub’s liquor licence is a significant blow to the establishment. The GLB’s decision was based on findings that the club posed a potential threat to public safety. According to the board, the suspension will remain in effect until the South African Police Service (SAPS) completes its investigation and the formal inquiry concludes.

The GLB stated,

“The licensee has demonstrably failed to meet the legal requirements outlined in the Gauteng Liquor Act. Establishments that violate these regulations will face appropriate consequences.”

Ongoing Police Investigation

The SAPS has launched a comprehensive investigation into the incidents at Zanzou Nightclub. Charges being pursued include compelled rape, assault, crimen injuria, intimidation, and kidnapping. Authorities are also searching for at least eight foreign nationals believed to be involved in the assaults.

The Gauteng Department of Economic Development has expressed deep concern over the incidents, highlighting the club’s failure to report the criminal activities to the police. “The licensee’s primary focus appears to be on reputational damage rather than the well-being of the victims,” the department noted in a statement.

Regulatory Breaches and Legal Consequences

The Gauteng Liquor Act requires all licensees to comply with their legal obligations, including adhering to municipal bylaws and national regulations. The GLB’s assessment revealed that Zanzou Nightclub had failed to meet these standards, particularly in ensuring the safety and security of its patrons.

“The acts of violence and misconduct occurred on the licensed premises, implicating the establishment in serious regulatory breaches,” the GLB stated.

The board also criticized the club for not reporting the incidents to the authorities, as required by law.
