Former Minister Pravin Gordhan Has Died: Family Reveals Cause of Death

In a heartbreaking development, former South African Minister Pravin Gordhan has died aged 75.

Gordhan died in the early hours of Friday morning at an undisclosed hospital, surrounded by his family, close friends, and comrades from the liberation struggle.

Pravin Gordhan’s Cause of Death Revealed

After days of speculation, the Gordhan family revealed that Pravin Gordhan succumbed to cancer. His death marks the end of a storied career in public service and political activism that spanned decades. He leaves behind his wife, Vanitha, and two daughters, Anisha and Priyesha.

In a statement, the family asked for privacy during this difficult time of mourning. Details of his funeral and a media briefing, to be conducted by the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation on behalf of the family, will be announced soon.

Pravin Gordhan’s Final Words

As Gordhan neared the end, he reportedly bid farewell to his family, saying,

“I have no regrets, no regrets… We have made our contribution.”

Legacy of Leadership

Pravin Gordhan had been a political activist since his teenage years, fighting against apartheid and contributing to South Africa’s liberation. After the 2024 general election, he decided to step down from active politics, hoping to spend more time with his family.

His last public role was as Minister of Public Enterprises, a position he held from 2018 until his retirement earlier this year. Prior to that, Gordhan served two terms as Minister of Finance, from 2009 to 2014 and again from 2015 to 2017. Between these two tenures, he also served as Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs from 2014 to 2015.

Before his ministerial roles, Gordhan had an illustrious career as the Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) from 1999 to 2009
