‘I was a bet’ Sonia Mbele Gets Candid About Her Divorce
The talented actress, Sonia Mbele, widely known for her role in “Blood & Water,” recently revealed more details about her 2021 divorce from her ex-husband, Leslie Sedibe. During an exclusive interview on Dineo On S*X n Suff, Sonia shared her heartfelt experience of being married to Leslie, a former executive at the South African Football Association (SAFA) and an attorney.
She candidly expressed, “While I was there [in her marriage] and waking up to the dawn of who are you, who did I marry, and living with that person every day and realizing this is a MFer.”
Hope and Prayer for Her Children
Sonia Mbele deeply hoped and prayed that her children, whom she cherished, would see the true nature of her ex-husband. She chose to remain silent, with the desire that her children would perceive Leslie Sedibe for the man she knew him to be.
“[I was] praying that one day my children, not everyone else, but my children wake up to see him for who and what he really is and that day happened,” she said.
When her son reached the age of 15, he confided in Sonia, revealing that he no longer wanted to live in the same house as his father. The revelation brought mixed emotions for Sonia, who said, “At 15, he was like ‘I’m done.’ And for me, I was like, ‘thank you, Jesus.”
Lessons from the Divorce
Sonia Mbele expressed her wish that people could recognize red flags in their relationships earlier. She agreed with Dineo that the purpose of the interview was to share personal experiences and not to criticize anyone.
Reflecting on the past, she said, “There was a time when we did not speak for years, and I am comfortable talking about this now. But there was a time when I wasn’t.” The renowned actress explained that she is now willing to share her story because her children have grown up and can assess and decide for themselves. “What I am saying now will no longer be a shocker to them,” she added.
Sonia emphasized that people enter marriages with the intention to make them work, and she was no exception. However, over time, she discovered things that slowly eroded their love and happiness.
Deception and Betrayal
Sonia Mbele shared a distressing incident where her ex-husband tricked her into signing a document that granted him all the rights to their home. Furthermore, she learned that Leslie had seen her on television before they met and had made a bet with his friends that he would win her over.
“Then you find out that actually you were a bet. They saw you on TV – it was four people; it was on your marks, get set – go!…I was a bet,” she said, expressing her shock and hurt.
