The couple’s love story began at the University of Cape Town, where Kgomotso was starting her first year, and Calvin had just started an exchange program. They met during a freshers’ party, a moment that would forever change their lives. She told True Love:
“He must have been anxious to approach me because his friend asked if he could introduce me to Calvin. When I looked over, I saw a guy who looked like he had just walked off the set of a music video or a basketball game. He was a total American hunk! We took time to get to know each other. Even though we were seemingly two very different people with different upbringings from different countries, we were instantly comfortable with each other.”
Despite the initial challenges of a long-distance relationship with Kgomotso in South Africa and Calvin in the United States, their love prevailed.
Over three years, they navigated the challenges of maintaining a cross-continental relationship fueled by their deep love for each other and their determination to make it work. Kgomotso frequently visited Calvin in the US.

Calvin’s proposal was a moment of pure romance. On New Year’s Eve in 2002, he knelt down and asked Kgomotso to be his wife, and she joyfully accepted. Calvin respected and honoured Kgomotso’s South African heritage by participating in traditional marriage rites, including lobola, amahlabiso, and ho apesa.
Kgomotso Christopher and her husband had a traditional wedding in 2003 and a white wedding the following year, celebrating their love in two culturally significant ceremonies.
