The South African presidency has officially announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will be visiting the country next month. This visit is part of ongoing efforts to facilitate peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.
According to presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya, the visit is scheduled for April 10 and aims to address obstacles hindering the commencement of peace negotiations.
Focus on Peace Initiatives
Magwenya emphasized that President Zelensky’s visit is a continuation of discussions initiated by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa with both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The goal is to establish an inclusive peace process that could pave the way for a resolution to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
“The visit is intended to identify and remove any barriers preventing the start of meaningful peace talks,” Magwenya stated.

Zelensky’s Gratitude for South Africa’s Support
In a recent social media post, President Zelensky expressed his gratitude to President Ramaphosa for South Africa’s unwavering support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He highlighted the importance of shared values between the two nations, stating
“Nothing about Ukraine should be decided without Ukraine. We are hopeful for a just and lasting peace this year, and South Africa’s voice is crucial in this process.”
Zelensky also noted that the two leaders have maintained regular communication since South Africa adopted a neutral stance in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which began in February 2022.
Background of the Diplomatic Engagement
Ukrainian officials revealed that Pretoria extended an invitation to President Zelensky on January 20, but the details of the visit were not finalized at the time. However, the two leaders later met at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, where they discussed the possibility of Zelensky’s visit to South Africa.
