Worried that your beloved might be straying? Forget snooping through windows or checking mobile phones – now your bed can do the spying for you.
Inventors have unveiled a model that senses “suspicious activity”, then tells its owner via an app if the mattress is being used – and even how many people are snuggling up on it.
The £1 200 (about R25 000) ‘Smarttress’ as it is called, was created by Spanish mattress-maker Durmet after figures showed Spaniards are the most unfaithful partners in Europe, with one report suggesting they cheat an average of 2.3 times per year.
The bed’s ‘Lover Detection System’ includes 24 ultrasonic sensors that generate a 3D map of the mattress to show exactly which areas are receiving greater pressure, and what movement is taking place.
Described by developers as “foolproof”, the electronic system behind the innovation is said to be completely undetectable, as it is integrated into the mattress’s springs.
And for anyone anxiously looking for a bit of long-term reassurance, the bed comes with a handy five-year warranty.
Durmet spokesperson Jose Antonio Muinos said: “We came up with the idea after we saw the figures on infidelity that said Spaniards were the most unfaithful in Europe. It is a concept that will bring peace of mind to men and women, not just at night but also during the day while they are out at work and the bed should really not be in use.”
He added: “On the outside it is just a normal-looking and very comfortable mattress, but inside hides some cutting-edge technology. We think the mattress will do well internationally because it is the only one in the world that uses this technology, and is designed specifically for the objective of catching cheating partners.” Potential buyers can purchase the product on the Smarttress website with the “utmost confidentiality”, Mr Muinos said.
The 2015 leak of data from the extramarital affairs website Ashley Madison revealed that Madrid has the highest numbers of cheating spouses, followed closely by London.
The Smarttress follows other inventions designed to catch lovecheats. The app mCouple, unveiled last year, allows users to track almost every detail of their partner’s life. Users are given access to every phone call, text and email, and any activity on Skype or Facebook, as well as pictures and videos taken on their mobile.
People can even record their partner’s mobile phone conversations – and track their movements using GPS technology.
The app was created by London-based firm mSpy, which stressed that users must first get their partner’s consent before downloading the device onto their phone.
A similar app, called Couple Tracker, costs just 79p and markets itself as “the best affair and cheating prevention and detection mobile application”.
The app includes a GPS tracking reading every half hour, full call history and a detailed record of everyone who comments on and likes their partner’s posts on Facebook. It has been downloaded five million times.
The Smarttress is not the first mattress with special in-built technology. Last month British designers created the Balluga bed, which is said to be a solution to sleepless nights, mattress-related backache – and even claims to silence snoring partners.
The vibrating “smart bed” is made up of air-filled balls, covered in foam, and crammed full of technology to monitor sleep and regulate temperature. Many of its features can be controlled using a mobile phone.
