Banyana Banyana Coach Eyes More Trophies

Banya Banyana coach Desiree Ellis is already eyeing the Afcon and World Cup championships following her quadruple Cosafa championship trophy and the seventh for South Africa.

This follows their emphatic 4 – 2 victory over Botswana in the just ended 2020 Women’s Cosafa championship finals that were held over the weekend.

“We had a very short time in training but the fitness trainer did a stunning job. Our first game was a bit rusty but we worked it off. On how we have managed to remain consistent is by having to know your opponent and you have to plan check out the key players, their strengths and weakness then we go into training, the other team plays as an opposition and then we execute what we have figured out in the main game and the players have been managing to do that. Nothing that we do is by chance each and everyone plays their part. It was a very short period of time but am sure doors are already knocking for some of the players. It’s a joy when you have to select from a squad that have versatile skills.

We consistently look at players because we need to make sure that we are happy with what we select and trust in their abilities. We always say it’s a team first and individualism later. It was really a team performance. Moreover, we do it for the fans they are the important people. It was difficult playing in front of an empty stadium but the players remained unfazed and delivered.

Moving forward, we have already given our plan to SAFA for next year we have to qualify for the Afcon and World Cup we want to make sure we integrate overseas and local players but players need to be ready and keep on training,” said Ellis.
