The Controversial Zimbabwe Trip
In August, Pearl Thusi, veteran thespian Sello Maake KaNcube, actress Sonia Mbele and a troop of African journalists went on a tour to Zimbabwe.
The tour, which took place days before the country’s 2023 elections, comprised a visit to the majestic Victoria Falls, a meeting with Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa and a banquet with Government officials.
The trip raised ire among Zimbabweans and South Africans, who saw the trip and photo ops as an endorsement of the ruling party in Zimbabwe. Pearl Thusi explained that she was unaware of a visit to President Mnangagwa when the tour organiser paid her.
