Zoleka Mandela was born on April 9, 1980, in South Africa. Her parents, Zinzi Mandela and an unidentified father parted ways during her early years. Growing up, she carried the esteemed Mandela name and was raised by her aunt, Zenani Mandela, the eldest daughter of the iconic Nelson Mandela and Winnie Mandela.

Family Life and Tragedy

Zoleka is a mother of four – two sons and two daughters. Tragedy struck in 2010 when her daughter, Zenani Mandela, passed away in a tragic car accident at the tender age of three. Zoleka’s son, Zenawe Zibuyile, also passed away in 2011 during infancy. Despite these heart-wrenching losses, she remains a mother to two surviving children: Zanyiwe Zenzile, born in 2014, and Zwelami, born in 2003.

Road Safety Campaign

Following the loss of her daughter in a car accident, Zoleka initiated the Long Short Walk campaign in collaboration with the Global Commission on Road Safety. The campaign’s mission was to raise awareness about responsible road use and to prevent road accidents in South Africa.

Marriage and Challenges

In April 2014, Zoleka Mandela married Thierry Bashala, and the couple welcomed their first child later that year. Their relationship began under unusual circumstances, with Thierry initially pretending to be a jeans seller to get her attention. Despite warnings, their connection deepened, leading to their marriage.

Zoleka’s journey has been marked by tremendous challenges. She endured sexual abuse at a young age, which led her down the path of drug addiction. In 2011, she missed her daughter’s funeral due to hospitalization following a drug-induced episode. Battling addiction was not her only struggle; Zoleka also faced a breast cancer diagnosis. However, she emerged as a survivor, using her experiences to raise awareness about the disease and emphasizing the significance of a positive mindset in the fight against cancer.

In August 2022, Zoleka received the diagnosis of terminal bone metastasis cancer. Despite this grim prognosis, she celebrated her final radiotherapy session on May 4, 2023, displaying her unwavering spirit and determination.

The Zoleka Mandela Foundation

Founded in 2013, the Zoleka Mandela Foundation was born from Zoleka’s personal experiences with breast cancer, the loss of her daughter, and the challenges she has overcome. The foundation is dedicated to social upliftment and education, focusing on issues such as road safety, breast cancer awareness, accountability, volunteerism, and personal growth, especially among the youth.

Authoring Her Story

In 2013, Zoleka Mandela published her autobiography, titled “When Hope Whispers.” This candid account of her life delves into her struggles with addiction, battles with cancer, relationship dynamics, and the profound impact of her daughter’s passing. The book serves as a beacon of hope for those navigating through their own life hardships.

Advocacy through Social Media

Zoleka boasts a substantial social media presence, amassing over 199,000 followers on Instagram. Through her platform, she continues to amplify the message of breast cancer awareness and shares her journey of resilience, inspiring countless individuals worldwide.
