Why Scandal’s Omphile chose to be a lesbian

Unlike most characters on Scandal, Omphile (Bohlale Boikanyo) has gone through more trauma and changes in her youth.

Her mother passed away leaving her with her estranged father and his wife and kids. She was sent away to boarding in another province.

Gugu played by Lerato Walaza who has a bizarre haircut, tattoos, and piercings became her friend. We expected her father to not approve of her friend he’s old-school, but he actually accepted her; when she recited her Zulu clan names.

Her step-mother doesn’t approve of her new friend because she finds her dodgy and not a good influence on her step-daughter.

Omphile’s character became questionable when she came home in Sho-Madjozi-colourful braids because it seemed uncharacteristic of her. Her step-sister; Lindiwe also went through wild things when she was a teenager but she wasn’t bizarre or awkward like Omphile.

I figured out who the real Omphile was the moment she brought her friend home and when she beat up that strange boy yesterday.

She attacked  that boy like a jealous lover who is trying to protect what’s hers. Omphile is a lesbian and she hasn’t figured it out yet.

She’s in love with her friend; Gugu. At this stage, we don’t know if Gugu is a lesbian as well because she just arrived. Gugu might just be going through a phase and finds Omphile cool to hang out with because they have a connection.

The only person who will accept Omphile when she comes out is her step-sister; Lindiwe and her aunt; Phindile.

Her parents will be devastated since they are judgemental and religious. Her father won’t approve of Gugu anymore and they will ban them from seeing each other.

Probably, both Omphile and Lindiwe will rebel and move out of their parents’ house.
